Rachell Morris originally hails from Telford in Shropshire and returned to her mother’s homeland, Ireland, 32 years ago. Rachell now resides in County Wexford, living with her partner Colm and two children, Gerard and Kaiden.
Rachell’s love of animals shone at an early age! At seven months old, Rachell’s family dog Bess, a black Labrador, used to sit next to her allowing Rachell to hold onto her and they would walk together - until Bess got fed up and sat down.
Rachell learned how to read the body language of animals from a young age, and this helped her in the years ahead in her work with animals. Rachell started horse riding at the age of four and had the opportunity of working with many species of animals throughout her life. She has worked with horses, cattle, sheep and pigs and during her time in Dublin Zoo, in the 1990’s, with exotic large mammals including elephants, hippos, rhinos, large cats, polar bears and primates.
Being able to read an animal’s body language comes naturally to Rachell; it’s so important to their well-being because animals can’t tell you if they are sick, unhappy, worried or feel threatened. This skill is also essential for training and working with general purpose search dog, as one of the key factors is being able to read the dog’s body language. When instructing and training teams, Rachell can read each dog’s body language from the first day and handlers learn very quickly how to read their own dog’s body language also. This is vital especially if they aim to progress to join the world of search and rescues.
Rachell co-runs Wexford K9 Search and Rescue with Liam McCabe. Rachell’s role is as Head Trailing Team Instructor and she also handles and trains the victim recovery dogs for land and river/water searches. Having expansive experience of K9 Search and Rescue under her belt for trailing and victim recovery, in 2021 Rachell became the first mantrailing instructor in Ireland, opening the doors to K9 Detect and Find Ireland.
Rachell can offer students comprehensive instruction at all levels of experience.
